Lockdown Averted 14-29 Lakh COVID Cases, Saved 37,000 – 78,000 Lives

According to Boston Consulting Group’s model, the lockdown saved between 1.2-2.1 lakh lives and number of Covid-19 cases deflected is between 36-70 lakh, said Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation on Friday. In a progression of tweets, the ministry showed how the lockdown has apparently contained the spread of the infection.

“As per a joint study by Ministry of Statistics and Indian Statistical Institute, we find that around 20 lakh cases and 54,000 deaths have been averted due to lockdown,” the ministry said in another tweet.

The Union health ministry on Thursday said the time of lockdown has been gainfully used to “ramp up the health infrastructure”, with around 3,027 committed COVID-19 hospitals and 7,013 consideration habitats being prepared the nation over to battle the sickness.

The declaration came after certain media reports questioned the nation’s preparedness to manage the highly infectious disease.

“There are reports in a section of the media about some decisions of the government regarding the lockdown implementation and response to COVID-19 management. The period of the lockdown has been gainfully utilised to ramp up the health infrastructure in the country,” the ministry said.

US will Donate Ventilators to India, Says Donald Trump

The United States is working with India on developing a vaccine for coronavirus, President Donald Trump said on Friday, praising Indian-Americans as “great” scientists and analysts. He likewise said US will give ventilators to India in its battle against the “invisible enemy”.

“I am proud to announce that the United States will donate ventilators to our friends in India. We stand with India and Narendra Modi during this pandemic. We’re also cooperating on vaccine development. Together we will beat the invisible enemy,” Trump tweeted.

Tending to media, Trump said he is confident a Covid-19 vaccine would be accessible before the year’s over and declared he was appointing a previous pharmaceutical official to lead the effort.

“I just got back a short while ago from India recently and we are working very much with India and we have a tremendous Indian population in the US and many of the people that you are talking about are working on the vaccine too. Great scientist and researchers,” he told reporters in the Rose Garden of the White House as he unveiled a massive effort to speed track the development of coronavirus vaccine before year-end.

“Yes. We are working very closely also with India,” Trump said responding to a question.

He described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very good friend” of him.

“India has been so great and as you know your Prime Minister has been a very good friend of mine,” Trump said.

India’s home ministry has permitted 3000 schools under the central board of secondary education (CBSE) to begin evaluation of class 10 and class 12 board exam answer papers.

The approval went ahead Saturday following a request made by the union human resource development service. Alongside 3000 schools, the home service said 16 regional offices of the central board can begin operation while following covid-19 rules.

The approval, in any case, prohibits schools to open normal academic exercises like class room teaching.

HRD minister Ramesh Pokriyal said 3000 CBSE affiliated schools have been recognized as assessment centers across India and special permission will be allowed to these schools for the limited purpose for avaluation.

“This will help us to quickly evaluate the 2.5 crore answer sheets. The results will be declared after the remaining board examinations have been conducted (scheduled between July 1 and 15, 2020),” the minister said.

India is hoping to restart its new academic year in August-September following quite a while of education disruptions due to covid-19 and class 10 and 12 board exam results has an influence in starting the new academic calender.

CBSE Class 10th Board Exams Suspended For This Year

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class 10 board exams has been suspended for the year, the union human resource development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said Tuesday days after asserting that it will be conducted alongside Class 12 board exams once the situation improves.

“No examination to be held for class X students nationwide, except for students from North-East Delhi. An adequate time of 10 days will be given to all students for the preparation of exams,” HRD minister tweeted in the evening.

The ministry also didn’t explain promptly how students will be passed – regardless of whether it depends on internal school performance or marks will be given on an average of scored in other papers. The exemption for upper east Delhi understudies was made on the grounds that their exams had got affected because of the anti-CAA protest much before the covid-19 lockdown.

The announcement comes after a webinar where the minister addressed understudies from various parts of India. After the online class, the HRD serve had said that his ministry will report dates for CBSE 12th Board exams in next two days.

While 76 papers of CBSE class 10 and Class 12 board exams were held mid-path due to covid-19 episode and the subsequent lockdown, the HRD service after a meeting with state education ministers had kept up that 29 core papers exams will be conducted once the circumstance improves and lockdown is lifted.

On Tuesday the service reported that “exams for 10th class are over for the entire country”. However, it didn’t explain whether it applies to all educational committees run by states or just CBSE that functions under the HRD ministry.
