Vijayawada Police : Most calls to cops are prank calls
The Dial 100 service by Vijayawada police, which saved lives of many in the city, is also being misused by lakhs every year for silly reasons. People continue to call the police to prank them or make irrelevant complaints like losing a dog on the street, reporting a fake murder and several others. Over 93% of the phone calls received by Dial 100 service in the year 2015 from people under Vijayawada police commissionerate are just prank calls, According to a report, out of over 6.4 lakh calls received by the police last year only 38,380 were genuine calls in which dialers needed real assistance in the year 2015.
- Total calls received: 6,40,131. Blank, enquiry and calls by miscreants: 6,01,751.
- True calls: 38,380. Total lives saved through Dial 100 service: More than 22.
Miscreants who wanted to have fun out of pranks with the police made the rest, according to the police. “There is no option other than accepting every call we receive through the three booths. Only after the local cop on ground visits the spot the genuineness of the call would be known.” said Control Room inspector Mr K.M.S. Reddy Mr Reddy further said that many a times people call but not utter a word and even kids make calls.
“In case of prank calls, we possibly trace out the callers and counsel them so that such attempts are not repeated,” Mr. Reddy added. The average response time is 8.05 seconds as calculated automatically by the software. The time period between the moment complainant cuts the call and cops report from the particular scene are considered as response time. The response time in January was 20.31 seconds and the same was 5.21 seconds in December.
