Girl Baby Born with ‘Harlequin’ Disorder in Nagpur : A strange incident has happened in Lata Mangeshkar Medical College & Hospital, Nalgonda. A 23 years old woman from a farmer’s family was given birth to a baby girl with ‘Harlequin’ disorder on Sunday at 12.30AM. ‘Harlequin’ is the rare congenital disorder, in which baby born with no external skin. This is the rare scenario that happens due to mutation in the genes. Dr Yash Banait , Nilofar Mujawar, Dr Prachi Dixit, and Dr Meenakshi were involved in the operation of this baby girl’s delivery. The baby was born pre-mature with 1.2 kg of weight. This is the complete rare incident in India. Harlequin’s babies will be occurs once in every 3,00,000 births. “Harlequin Ichthyosis is a very rare severe genetic skin disease that cause thickening of the stratum corneum of the epidermis. In such cases, the child’s whole body is encased in‘armour’ of thick white plates of skin separated with deep cracks. In addition, the eyes, ears, private parts and the appendages may be abnormally contracted,” said obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Avinash Banait.
“There is no skin on the body, so skin grafting is not a possibility. But the baby hasn’t developed any breathing problems lest she would have required to be kept on ventilation,” said Dr Yash Banait.
Harlequin Baby’s Condition ?
The infant was born pre-term with a solidified skin and weighed 1.2 kg during childbirth. The infant is born without ears, is totally visually impaired with two brilliant red lumps set up of eyes, additionally has only two little openings for a nose and a reversed eye cover. Doctors have advised that the baby needs more attention than a normal baby. She needs more petroleum jelly, coconut oil, and more moisture to protect her skin condition. In past, the turmoil was almost lethal and most regular reason was contamination.
